ETH RESEARCH TEAM IN ASSET

The Computational Social Science group (http://www.coss.ethz.ch) headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk Helbing (http://www.coss.ethz.ch/people/helbing.html) represents ETH Zurich within the ASSET consortium. Dr. Evangelos Pournaras (http://www.evangelospournaras.com) and Thomas Asikis (http://www.coss.ethz.ch/people/phd/tasikis.html) are the main researchers working on the ASSET project with expertise on distributed systems, social sensing and data science. Evangelos and Thomas are designing recommender and machine learning algorithms for sustainable consumerism in ASSET. They support the consortium by introducing rigorous scientific methodologies required to understand complex social-technical systems. COSS is an internationally known and highly inter-disciplinary group dedicated to the understanding of complex techno-socio-econimic systems such as pedestrian flows, disaster and traffic management as well as designing the future sustainable digital society as envisioned within the nervousnet project (http://nervousnet.ethz.ch).

Tartu Consumers Cooperative (Tartu COOP) is the consumers’ society operating currently in 22 retail stores in the city of Tartu and Tartu County in Estonia. Tartu COOP was founded in 1908 and has expanded significantly and developed into one of the largest regional retail businesses within more than 100 years. Today, approximately 500 staff members are employed in Tartu COOP and it’s subsidiaries. TCC is the biggest in Estonia and has the most active membership consumers’ society. Tartu COOP is operating in an area of around 150.000 inhabitants, and has more than 38.000 members. The three main brands that are represented by Tartu COOP are Maksimarket, Konsum and A&O. Tartu COOP is part of COOP Estonia and is the biggest Estonian consumers’ society regarding turnover and number of members. With 19 regional consumers’ societies, COOP Estonia Group is the trade group with the biggest total sales and market shares of 22% in Estonia.
